I joined Phi Sigma Sigma when I was a sophomore in college. I had lost many loved ones that year and was in a rough spot. I was just going through the motions of every day, trying to make it through. One day I ran into Kia Humphrey and Breanna Jordan on campus. I recognized them from a class we all had together. They invited me to go to a fraternity party with them that night and I agreed. That night was one of the first nights I had smiled and actually had a good time in months. I continued to hang out with them and get to know them and they encouraged me to go through fall recruitment to try to find a sorority that best fit me. I met a lot of great people that weekend and had a wonderful time. At the end of the weekend, there was no question in my mind where I belonged. Phi Sigma Sigma was the sorority for me.
I am so grateful to Kia and Breanna for pulling me out of my slump and encouraging me to join a sorority. I knew Phi Sigma Sigma was the sorority for me because as I met other actives during recruitment, I felt like I had known the girls in that room my entire life. They were so welcoming and I clicked with them right away. These girls have become my friends and family. I love each and every one of them. They have helped me grow as a person and become the woman I am today. I know that no matter what life throws at me, I have my sisters to be there for me. They are always there to catch me when I fall. It feels like home to me.
I'm a senior now, which is bittersweet. Although I won't see my sisters every day, I know that they will always be there when I need them. All I have to do is send out a text saying "Hey, I'm bored! Let's go do something!" and I'll instantly get replies. We always have fun together with out mixers, sleepovers, and sisterhood events. We have a formal every spring where we all get dressed up, have a great dinner, hand out awards, and dance! And every summer we go out of town together for a weekend to prepare for recruitment, but also to make sure we get some chapter sisterhood time in over the summer.
Phi Sigma Sigma is fun, but it is also so much more than that. Phi Sigma Sigma is leadership, philanthropy, friendship, and love. It has helped me become a leader and give what I can to our community. It has provided me with lifelong friendships and even bridesmaids for my wedding next year! Most importantly, Phi Sigma Sigma has given me a home. No matter where I go or what I do. I know my sisters have my back. One a Phi Sigma Sigma, always a Phi Sigma Sigma.
Panhellenic Council members, recruitment counselors, and other sorority women in our Greek community will be blogging throughout the summer months to help potential members prepare for recruitment.
