My name is Abby Valkovci and I’m a senior General Studies major at IUS. I joined Sigma Kappa in February 2016 and since then, my life has changed in so many ways. I decided to join Greek life when I transferred to IUS because I desperately needed a support system and had no idea where else to find it. I found myself isolated when I first started attending here, knowing no one and having trouble making friends beyond classroom acquaintances. Freshman Abby never would have thought that my shy, nerdy self would ever fit into Greek life, but I felt it was my last resort to meet people – and I’m so glad that I gave it a chance, because it defied all the stereotypes and expectations I held, and became so much more to me than just a way to make friends. I can honestly say now that my sisterhood is one of the most important things to me in my life, and every day I strive to be a better person because of my sisters. Sigma Kappa has helped me blossom into a more confident woman who every day tries harder to be someone my sisters can be proud of. I feel like I am who I’m meant to be now because of my sorority; beyond just taking me out of my shell, it’s given me a purpose and constant new goals to work towards. If you are looking for a group of friends to uplift you, support your goals, and help you grow into the best version of yourself, I highly recommend going Greek!
Panhellenic Council members, recruitment counselors, and other sorority women in our Greek community will be blogging throughout the summer months to help potential members prepare for recruitment.
